How to Choose a Rug for Your Home
One of the pleasures of decorating your home is choosing the right rug. A rug might not be the focal point of the room unless it’s used as a wall-hanging, but it can greatly affect the mood of the space. Because of this, you’ll probably choose different types of rugs for the different rooms in your home.
Rug Styles and Designs
The number of rug styles and designs is almost too numerous to list. The good news is that there’s almost certainly a rug that’s perfect for every room in your home. However, there are so many styles and designs that it can be overwhelming. Some interior designers divide rugs into three basic categories.
1. Traditional
Traditional rugs often have beautiful and intricate patterns. People typically think of Oriental rugs when they think of traditional rugs, but other traditional rugs include Aubusson, Savonnerie and Scandinavian types. These rugs are often woven and knotted by hand and use natural dyes. Because of this, they can be quite expensive and are often placed in areas where there’s low traffic, low humidity and no direct sunlight.
2. Transitional
This style of rug updates the intricacy of traditional rug styles and blends them with contemporary characteristics. The colors of transitional rugs tend to be more muted, and they can be made of man-made textiles such as polyester and nylon. All of this not only retains the transitional rug’s beauty but also makes it affordable. When these rugs are machine made and of synthetic materials, they are often referred to as disposable rugs in the industry. Whereas transitional rugs made of wool, or natural fibers such as Nepalese wool rugs, they can last a lifetime when cared for properly.
3. Contemporary
Contemporary rugs often use abstract or geometric designs. They can use artificial or natural textiles and dyes, and are often machine-made. This allows them to be replicated and affordable. The one problem with contemporary rugs is that they may fall victim to outdated patterns and textures. Orange shag rugs might have been popular in the 1960s, but that may not be the case today. These rugs are also often considered to be disposable rugs, and are not intended to last a long period of time.
Choosing Rugs for Different Rooms
Each room in your home has a different function, and the rug you choose should reflect this. Many interior decorators claim that a boldly colored rug is just the thing for the living room. This is a “public” room where you entertain family and friends, and the design of the rug should have a certain energy about it. On the other hand, rugs in the bedrooms should promote peace and quiet. The rug in the dining room should not only be aesthetically pleasing but also needs to be easy to clean and bear up under chairs being moved around. A rug in the entry hall might be longer than it is wide even as it’s colorful and welcoming. Rugs in wet rooms such as bathrooms, mudrooms and the kitchen need to be quite durable as well as attractive.
