Turkish Rug Cleaning — Hand-Washed Expertise in Austin, TX
Your Turkish rug is precious to you. You may have received it as a gift for your birthday, wedding or anniversary. It may have been passed down as an heirloom. Or you bought it in Izmir during that unforgettable vacation and arranged to have it carefully shipped to your home. Because it’s so valuable, you take the best care of it. You didn’t place it on a bare floor but made sure it had a supportive carpet beneath it. It’s not in a room that gets direct sunlight that can fade its jewel-like colors. If you even allow people to walk on it, you insist that they take off their shoes. You wouldn’t dare put it in your dining room where food or drink could spill on it, and you make sure all pets and children are supervised when they’re in the room.
But even with all those precautions,
your Turkish rug will need cleaning. A layperson can’t thoroughly clean an Oriental rug. It requires special handling, and a regular vacuum cleaner not only won’t pick up all the dirt and dust but can damage the rug. Shampooing your rug as you would a synthetic carpet can be too harsh. Because it’s so valuable, you want only the best cleaning experts to handle your rug. This is where professional Turkish rug cleaning at Aegis Fine Rug Cleaning comes in.
Why Turkish Rugs Require Specialized Care
There are many reasons why your beautiful Turkish rug needs special care. Although it may also contain cotton and/or silk, it’s woven primarily from wool. Everyone knows what happens when a wool garment is washed the wrong way. A sweater meant for a large man can shrink to a sweater fit for a baby. Such a mishap would be catastrophic if it happened to a delicate Turkish rug. Not only this, the wool that goes into making a Turkish rug needs to be especially springy, soft and resilient. This wool often comes from year-old lambs raised in the mountains during the winter and shorn in the spring. The wool from these lambs is then washed, carded and spun, either by a machine or the weaver’s own hands.
Unfortunately, the air pockets that keep wool springy and deliciously soft beneath the feet also trap dust, dust mites, dead skin and other contaminants.
When it comes to hand-washed Turkish rugs, cleaners must make sure they retain the rug’s bright colors, especially if those colors are the result of natural dyes. These include reds from madder plant roots, yellows from the skins of pomegranates, blues from the indigo plant and browns from nut shells.
What Makes Our Process Different
The rug washing process of our professionals at Aegis is special because
we wash your rug by hand, no matter how large it is. A fine Turkish rug is so valuable that we couldn’t possibly run it through a machine, no matter how well-calibrated that machine is. We certainly don’t use the harsh chemical cleansers that could ruin the delicate wool fibers, destroy the dyes or strip it of lanolin, the wax secreted by sheep that keeps their wool clean and weather resistant.
Our Aegis professionals also pick up the rug at your home, but before we do that, we’ll give you a call to ask about your particular rug. We’ll arrive at your home, gently roll up the rug, take it away to be cleaned, and return it when it’s ready. Depending on the size and complexity of your rug, it can take as many as 10 days for it to be cleaned, dried and ready to return to you. It might take a bit longer if we need to make repairs.
Experience With Fine and Delicate Turkish Rugs
We’ve been in the business of cleaning delicate Turkish rugs for over 20 years, and experience has taught us the best way to clean. For one thing, even before a drop of cleaning solution touches your rug, we’ll need to remove any dust, dirt and other contaminants from its fibers. We’ve learned the best way to do this is using compressed air and running your rug through a screen that shakes away the loosened dirt. After this, we clean the air with an industrial-strength vacuum and an air scrubber.
Then, we check the components of your Turkish rug, such as the dyes and the direction of the pile. This allows for the creation of the best cleanser for your particular rug. After the rug is washed and rinsed, we’ll lay it on an air cushion, and dry it thoroughly through the application of waves of air. The rug won’t be hung, for hanging could distort it. When the rug is dry, it’s treated to protect it. Treatments can include fiber protectant, anti-allergens, moth-protectant and others that you may need or request. Every rug is treated individually, for every rug is unique.
