3 Tips on How to Select the Right Rug Size

3 tips on how to select the right rug size

A beautiful Oriental rug can add something special to a room’s atmosphere and structure. Without one, a room can seem empty, lack style, and mess with the overall spatial energy. But, how exactly do you find the right sized rug and where do you place it, so it has the most impact? The right sized rug can bring balance and warmth to a room that you’ll be hard-pressed to find in another item. We’ve compiled a guide to help you figure out how to select the right rug size and tips for placing it—read on!

Tips for Choosing the Right Rug Size

Understand Standard Sizing

Chances are, you don’t need the largest rug ever created for your home, but how do you find the right one? A large mosque in the United Arab Emirates needed the world’s largest hand-woven carpet (5,600 square meters) because the room it was going in was massive. You have to pay attention to the size of the room and understand that there is typically only a set amount of Oriental rug sizes—not normally as large as the one in the mosque. We have those listed below:

  • 3 x 5 feet
  • 4 x 6 feet
  • 5 x 8 feet
  • 7 x 10 feet
  • 8 x 11 feet
  • 9 x 12 feet

Figuring Out Your Perfect Rug Size

Before you start to shop for the perfect rug, you need to measure out the size of the room you want to place it in. Once you figure that out, a general tip for the rug size is to look for one that is about 2 feet smaller than the room itself. For example, if the room is 10 x 12 feet, then you should choose a rug that’s about 8 x 10 feet.

Now, depending on the room, the rug size will be different. A rug in the dining room should always be large enough to fit underneath all furniture legs. Even if the chairs are pushed back, there should still be enough carpet for the legs to rest on, so about 36 inches beyond all sides of the table. A rug in the living room has a few different options. Either all furniture legs are on the rug (which requires the largest rug), just the front legs are on the rug, or just the coffee table is on the rug. You need to pay attention to the furniture placement and how grounded you want guests to feel when they’re in the room.

For hallways, foyers, and bedrooms, runners often work quite well to give a bit of life without being too overwhelming. You’ll have to pay close attention to the scale for these, as you don’t want them to extend into the next room, past the furniture, or bump into any walls.

Use the Tape Trick

Probably our most important tip to select the right rug size is to use painter’s tape. Measure and lay out the size of the rug you think you want with tape. This will give you a good idea of spacing and show where you can place a rug that size in the room. Once you’re satisfied with the area taped off, you’ll know that you’re good to go!

Once you pick out the right rug for your room, make sure you clean it often, so it retains its quality. Aegis is where you should go for premier Oriental rug cleaning in Austin.
