There is a legend that China was a leader in cultivating the silkworm from 2640 to 2650 BCE. The practice of sericulture, which is silkworm cultivation, is older than documented history. Silk garments eventually became hot commodities in the Middle East. They were traded via China’s famous Silk Road, which was built during the Han dynasty that spanned late BCE and early CE centuries.

The Oldest Surviving Handmade Carpet

The discovery of the oldest surviving handmade carpet and other buried treasures suggests that rugs were brought by traders into China before the Silk Road existed. The discovery took place in 1949 in a part of Siberia that was not far from the border of China. Among other artifacts, Chinese silk and an old pile rug that was believed to be from Persia were found. The rug belonged to a Scythian nobleman. How to Care for Rug Fringes

Most rugs today are woven on cotton or wool foundations . Wool yarns have cuticles that break off from compacted dust and grit over time and begin to look dull. Cotton on the other hand, has no place to hide soil, so it gets embedded and ground into the strands.

I liken cleaning cotton fringe tassels to trying to clean heavily soiled shoelaces. There is no way to just magically make the soil disappear. If a rug begins with super white fringe when it’s new, this usually means that fringe was strongly bleached white before it went to market for sale.

This whitening process makes the fringe look great at that time, but it comes at a cost. Bleaches and oxidizers chemically damage the cotton fibers to create that “white” look, and it weakens them. Even the fumes from floor cleaning solutions that contain bleach can weaken and dissolve cotton fringes.

That damage may be slight, or may be severe, based on the strength of the solution – and whether there was already pre-existing damage that this is deteriorating even further.

When you have cotton fringes that easily break off when you tug a strand, this is a big warning sign of past chemical use.

If tassels are tearing away when they are walked on, this is also a sign of either severely worn fringe, chemically damaged fringe, or overly aggressive vacuuming of the fringe.

The challenge for rug cleaners when they are given fringe in this condition is it cannot be safely cleaned without some fiber loss. Even with a gentle cleaning by hand, fibers are going to break off over time. How To Hide Rug Fringe

One way is to first properly secure the end, so the foundation of the rug is intact, and then hide the tassels (if they are short) by wrapping the end in the same way the sides are over-wrapped with wool .

Removing Fringe From An Oriental Rug

When rug owners get frustrated with their fringe and take scissors to them, the rug will come apart, unless it has been professionally serged to maintain its structural integrity. By hiding the fringe, you can get the same look you want but without all the hassle of the tassel.

If wrapping the edge is not an option because the tassels are too long, you can also simply fold the tassels behind the rug and cover them with material. This is a solution you see on several of the newer Tibetan/Nepalese wool rugs. These rugs tend to have fantastic quality wool , in great natural tones or with splashes of color, and sometimes the very white fringe just does not frame it quite right, so some retailers have the fringe hidden with material. This keeps the rug entirely intact but gives consumers the look they want. The budget friendly version of hiding fringe is often done by taping the fringe to the back side of the rug. If you choose this option, I recommend you use painter’s tape because it leaves much less adhesive residue than clear packing tape or other options.

Just be careful because when you remove stronger tape from whitened/weakened fringe, you will be tearing away the tassels you were trying to protect!

Woven fringes are one of the most difficult types of fringes to weave. This style picks up where the plaited (kilim) fringe style stops. When finished with plaiting fringe, weavers add a thin strip of pile material to the kilim.
